Institutionalising platform dependence: The paradox of the European Media Freedom Act

Article 18 of the European Media Freedom Act presents a paradox: instead of mitigating platforms’ power over media freedom, it risks institutionalising and reinforcing it by allowing them to shape the regulation’s implementation.

Freedom of the media must evolve beyond institutional protection to safeguard citizens’ epistemic agency in digital societies where platforms and AI systems shape what we know and how we participate in democracy.
