Paola Lopez is a mathematician by training. Combining a mathematical perspective with gender studies, legal studies and science and technology studies, she is currently working on an interdisciplinary PhD thesis at the Department of Legal Philosophy at the University of Vienna.
In her research, she investigates automated decision-making systems and predictive analytics, focussing on their epistemic limitations as well as on their implications for equal treatment and democratic values when used in governance constellations. Her recent publication analyses the algorithmic system that the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) uses to classify the unemployed.
