After receiving his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science from the Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey), and his PhD at the Georgia Institute of Technology, he joined the engineering faculty of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an assistant professor. His research involved decision theory. In addition to his academic research and teaching, he acted as a consultant for the private and public sector in the United States. He was also invited to spent nearly two years in Milan, Italy, doing research at the University of Milan and consulting for the research consortium Milano Ricerche. After becoming professor, he returned to Turkey and joined the engineering faculty of the Middle East Technical University. Later he was elected to the Turkish Parliament in two consecutive elections but did not run for the third term. Currently, he is independent researcher, writer and speaker.
