Margaret Warthon is a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen. She holds a law degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law at the University of Göttingen. Prior to starting her PhD studies, Margaret completed training programs at CEIPI and CiTiP at the University of Strasbourg and KU Leuven respectively. Her research focuses on developing balancing mechanisms to address the tension between data protection transparency requirements and other competing interests in the public sector's use of biometric decision-making systems. Her current research interests include data protection, proportionality, biometrics, explainable AI, sociotechnical systems, and algorithmic surveillance.
