Marcel Wrzesinski

Marcel Wrzesinski works as an Open-Access-Officer at the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG). He is also a research associate at the HIIG “InnOAccess” project of the German Research Foundation (DFG; in cooperation with ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics). The project seeks to improve the publication infrastructure of “Internet Policy Review” and aims at creating sustainable OA business models in the “small science” context. The results are then applied and transferred to the research community. Marcel studied philosophy, gender studies, European ethnology and cultural anthropology in Bochum and Münster. His PhD project focuses on anticipatory, utopian narratives in sexual-emancipatory manifestos of the post-war period.

Before working at the HIIG he was Open Access journal editor at the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture in Giessen. Later on, he became a research associate for a project concerning Open Access transformation in gender studies (FU Berlin), which was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). He also lectured at the Universities of Giessen, Cologne, Bochum, the Humboldt University of Berlin as well as the New School for Social Research (New York City).

In 2017 he co-founded the “Open Gender Journal” (OA Gold). In 2018 he became co-representative of the working group “Open Digital Gender Studies” as well as executive board member of the German Gender Studies Association. In these capacities he mainly focusses on professionalizing, sustaining and networking Open Access in “smaller science” contexts.
