Information
João Carlos Magalhães is a postdoctoral researcher in the project Platform Governance and Copyright (H2020).
His research agenda broadly focuses on how platforms govern and can be governed. Much of his research has looked into the relationship between algorithmic power and democracy. In his doctoral thesis, conducted at the Media and Communications Department of the LSE (London School of Economics and Political Science), he explored how Facebook’s algorithmic visibility regime shaped the ways in which previously disengaged users came to express and understand themselves as political citizens – i.e. their civic voice – during Brazil’s 2013-2018 political crisis.
João has also received a MSc degree (Distinction) in media governance from the same LSE department, with a dissertation on Brazil’s “Internet Bill of Rights”. Previously, he studied history and journalism and worked as an editor, reporter and correspondent at Folha de S.Paulo, Brazil’s leading newspaper, writing mostly about politics, public policies and human rights.
