Information

I am an interdisciplinary researcher working at the intersection of law, digital media and communications, and political economy. Currently, I am a Chief Investigator at Digital Media Research Centre and a Lecturer in the School of Communication at the Queensland University of Technology. My recent monograph, Google Rules: The History and Future of Copyright Under the Influence of Google (Oxford University Press, 2020), evaluates Google’s accumulation of power and offers strategic policy recommendations for protecting the public interest in the digital environment. In 2016, I attended the University of California Berkeley as a visiting researcher where I gained critical insights about Silicon Valley culture that inform the analysis in the book. In 2019, I completed a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with Professor Nicolas Suzor, a global leader in platform governance studies. My current research agenda is driven by my assessment that maintaining democratic social and political systems requires confronting the power of the multinational corporations that dominate the digital environment and, increasingly, their development and deployment of AI-enabled technologies.
